Whoops, I really meant to get on here yesterday just so I could thank you all once again for hanging in with me all these years. Yes, yesterday was my blogiversary, and it marked 12 years since I published my first blog post. Thanks for commenting, emailing, tweeting, FB messaging, and just showing up. As I always say, if it weren't for you, I'd just write all this stuff in a notebook.
While I'm here…. Lessee, we watched The Wolf of Wall Street the other day, and it was almost unbearable to sit through. I truly felt toxic by the end, which I'm guessing was at least part of the point. But 3 hours was just too damn long, even with Leo's lovely face. Again with the hookers, and the lying, and the coke! Oy.
I forgot to mention that a while back we saw Sicario, which stars the dreamy Benicio del Toro, this time as a Mexican hit man working for the good guys (DEA) for a change—or is he? Emily Blunt plays the stereotypical idealistic FBI agent who's in over her head (and not terribly convincingly, I'm afraid). Josh Brolin is excellent as the grinning/maniacal take-no-shit boss of the whole operation. It was violent and pretty suspenseful, but ultimately not satisfying or memorable.
I read a terrific novel, though: The Hundred-Year House by Rebecca Makkai. It begins in 1999 and then goes back 100 years, tracing the lives of the people that have lived in a grand house that was at one point an artists' colony. The book is so cleverly crafted that you don't realize that you are trying to figure things out until they practically hit you in the head—so I recommend that you read carefully to keep track of details or else you will be flipping frantically through previous chapters to remind yourself what you might have missed. The writing is both beautiful and funny, the plot is amazingly well constructed, the characters are interesting, and the whole thing is just plain fun to read.
